South Jersey Gas continues partnership with Sustainable Jersey for Schools

Company’s third commitment delivers access for school sustainability certifications

FOLSOM, NJ, September 1, 2016 – South Jersey Gas today announced the continuation of its partnership with Sustainable Jersey for Schools as part of a community education award to improve energy efficiency, cut waste and cultivate Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education for schools and students throughout New Jersey.

Sustainable Jersey for Schools provides specific guidance and resources to schools on developing comprehensive sustainability programs. Participating schools earn points for various actions including performing energy audits, establishing a sustainability curriculum, converting to green cleaning products and boosting recycling efforts.

"Schools participating in this program have an increased ability to conserve energy and deliver community benefits. Working with Sustainable Jersey for Schools gives us the opportunity to help schools reduce their energy costs today while educating students on sustainable practices for tomorrow,” said South Jersey Gas President Jeffrey E. DuBois. “Helping our customers conserve energy has always been a high priority for South Jersey Gas. We are pleased to be able to support our schools in doing the same.”

South Jersey Gas’ initial commitment of $150,000 in October 2014 focused on developing the school-focused program, modeled after the successful Sustainable Jersey certification program for municipalities.

This third contribution from South Jersey Gas will assist Sustainable Jersey for Schools and its Program Underwriters, the New Jersey School Boards Association, the New Jersey Education Association, The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, and the New Jersey Board of Utilities Clean Energy Program in providing the 2,500+ public schools in the state with the necessary resources to attain significant environmental, academic, financial and health benefits.

“South Jersey Gas’ continued involvement will enable our schools to access training, tools and expert guidance,” said Donna Drewes, co-director of Sustainable Jersey.

Dr. Lawrence Feinsod, NJSBA executive director, explained “The link between sustainability and school districts will ultimately reach into the classroom, with benefits to our students’ physical and academic well-being. That is our major goal in helping our members to adopt financially and environmentally sustainable practices.”
