South Jersey Gas Awards Grant to Mad About Science

FOLSOM, N.J., May 31, 2017 – Seventy students will have the opportunity to improve their understanding of science and math thanks to a grant from South Jersey Gas that will fund after-school tutoring in Atlantic City.

“We want to instill a love of science in today’s students,” said Dave Robbins, president of South Jersey Gas. “Through programs like Mad About Science, South Jersey Gas is encouraging the next generation to gain the knowledge and skills needed for valuable career opportunities.”

The $9,840 grant is going toward Mad About Science, a non-profit started by a mother and her son that focuses on instilling a love of science and math, while also increasing the graduation rate, for students in middle and high school. The program focuses on students who are learning English as a second language, as well as African American and Hispanic students.

“The generous grant from South Jersey Gas provided us the opportunity to start the process of making a huge difference for the youth of Atlantic County,” said Darlyne de Haan, co-founder of Mad About Science.

The funding goes toward an after-school program for 70 students, between kindergarten and eighth grade, at Chelsea Heights School in Atlantic City. Tutors from Stockton University work with students for two hours a week over a three-month span, all while bridging the gap between learning English and learning science/math.

Darlyne de Haan and her son Bremen de Haan look for ways to engage with the students and make them excited about learning — using robotics or instructing them on how to eat healthier.
“We’re trying to use non-traditional methods to teach kids,” Darlyne de Haan said.
