South Jersey Gas lends a hand to Meals on Wheels of Salem County

FOLSOM, N.J., June 15, 2017 – With its freezer broken for the past year, Meals on Wheels of Salem County had difficulty storing meals for its elderly and disabled clients and had to depend on a local supermarket for freezer space.

Now, with a $5,000 grant from South Jersey Gas, the program bought a brand new industrial freezer that holds dozens of boxes of meals. Out of the $5,000 grant, $3,500 went to the new freezer and the remainder will help fund the ongoing meal service program.

“Meals on Wheels cares for vulnerable members of our community, providing them with what people need most — food to eat,” said Dave Robbins, president of South Jersey Gas. “Staying fed and staying warm, these are essentials of life.”

For its efforts, Meals on Wheels awarded South Jersey Gas an award for being part of its “Plateful of Hope” initiative. South Jersey Gas volunteers also offered their services on June 7 putting together 130 beach-themed bags filled with toiletries.

“Many of our clients are at poverty level so even something as simple as dish soap, a new sponge or toiletries makes a big difference to them,” said Peg Marshall, executive director of Meals on Wheels of Salem County.

Volunteers at Meals on Wheels of Salem County visit 150 clients a day and deliver approximately 45,000 meals a year. The volunteers not only bring meals but also develop relationships with the clients and check on their wellbeing.

“Sometimes our volunteers are the only people our clients see in a day,” Marshall said. “Providing them with little gift bags makes them feel loved and part of the community. We make sure they have that contact with the volunteers.”
