South Jersey Gas Supports Port Norris Fire Company With $1,000 First Responders Grant

FOLSOM, N.J. – South Jersey Gas, a subsidiary of South Jersey Industries (NYSE: SJI), recently presented the Port Norris Fire Company with a $1,000 grant as part of the company’s First Responders Grant Program. Port Norris Fire Company is one of eight recipients selected to receive the latest round of grants from South Jersey Gas. The grant funds will be used to help offset the cost of upgrading the company’s thermal imaging cameras (TICs) with the newest technology.

“Through our First Responders Grant Program, South Jersey Gas is proud to support local first responders,” said Dave Robbins, president of South Jersey Gas. “These grants will help provide lifesaving equipment, technology and training to each department, making sure their personnel have the tools necessary to serve. We are pleased to partner with the Port Norris Fire Company and recognize their work to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all they serve.”

Thermal imaging cameras allow firefighters to “see” heat from fire through smoke, allowing them to determine the source of a fire, locate trapped victims and/or pets and safely assess a burning structure when visibility is low or completely obstructed. TICs detect heat energy from a fire, giving firefighters the ability to better navigate, contain and ultimately extinguish flames. The cameras can even detect heat energy emitted through a door, wall or other solid enclosed structure, as well as energy that can be reflected off of water or mirrors.

“Thermal imaging cameras are a real asset to our firefighters,” explains Port Norris Fire Company Chief John Hoffman. “They allow our personnel to safely access burning structures and respond appropriately, without causing further harm to themselves or others. On behalf of our firefighters, we thank South Jersey Gas for selecting us for this generous grant and for their continued support in helping to make our community and residents safe.”

The First Responders Grant Program will be offered again in Fall 2018. All First Responders Grant Program recipients represent local police, fire or emergency medical services departments that are comprised of paid or volunteer staff members serving residents in municipalities located within the utility’s service area. Program information, eligibility guidelines and applications are available on the South Jersey Gas website at: www.southjerseygas.com/community.
