South Jersey Gas Reminds Customers to Dial 811 Before Digging

FOLSOM, NJ, April 3, 2019 – April kicks-off the digging season with homeowners and contractors tackling outdoor projects as the temperatures rise. South Jersey Gas, in collaboration with damage prevention advocates and utilities across the nation, recognizes April as Safe Digging Month and encourages customers to call 811 before starting any digging project.  

By law, New Jersey residents are required to make the free call to 811 to be connected to the New Jersey One-Call Center, who then notifies utilities of a customer’s intent to dig. In partnership with professional locators, utilities will mark the location of all service lines with spray paint or flags. Yellow markers, for example, indicate the location of natural gas lines. Once utility lines are marked, as a safety precaution and to ensure continuity of services it is crucial that customers avoid digging around these areas and if digging is required customers are encouraged to hand dig carefully around the marks.  

“Safety is our non-negotiable top priority,” said Dave Robbins, president, South Jersey Gas. “Something as simple as planting shrubs without knowing the location of underground utilities can impact safety, lead to costly repairs and disruption of utility services. Customers and excavators are encouraged to take advantage of this free service and call 811 before any digging project.”  

In honor of Safe Digging Month, on April 4, 2019, South Jersey Gas in partnership with the New Jersey Common Ground Alliance and local utilities will host a Safe Digging Month Celebration at the Home Depot located on 3540 NJ Rt. 66 in Neptune from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with educational materials, giveaways and lunch for homeowners and excavators, while supplies last.
