Energy Saving Tips

An energy-efficient home will keep you and your family comfortable while saving you money. You have the power to save money and energy with easy, practical solutions you can use today. These tips are good for your wallet and for the environment.

  • Air dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher’s drying cycle
  • Replace heater and air conditioner air filters once a month
  • Clean warm-air registers and make sure they’re not blocked by furniture, carpeting or drapes
  • Turn lights, televisions, smart speakers, computers and monitors off when not being used
    • For convenience, plug into a power strip and simply turn the power strip off
  • Lower your water heater setting to 120 degrees
  • Install aerating, low-flow faucets and showerheads
  • Repair leaky faucets promptly; a leaky faucet wastes gallons of water in a short period of time
  • Wash only full loads of dishes and laundry
  • During winter, keep window coverings on your south-facing windows open during the day to allow the sunlight to naturally warm your home (and closed during hot summer days)
  • Look for the ENERGY STAR® label on light bulbs, home appliances, electronics, office equipment and other products and consider products with the highest energy efficiency ratings for long-term savings
  • Seal cracks, gaps and leaks or add insulation wherever you have drafts. Keep the air you’re paying to heat or cool inside your home
  • Check the insulation in your attic, exterior and basement walls, ceilings, floors and crawl spaces
    • Consider a Home Performance with Energy Star® assessment – a specially trained and certified technician will assess your home from top to bottom and provide you with a list of recommended measures to improve the energy efficiency of your home and help you save money
