Clean Up with these Energy Savings in the Laundry Room

Clean Up with these Energy Savings in the Laundry Room
The average American family washes about 300 loads of laundry each year! Save energy and money with these helpful tips:
  • Wash your clothes in cold water if possible.
  • Wash only full loads of laundry or use the appropriate water level or load size selection on the washing machine.
  • Be sure not to over-dry clothes, and use the dryer’s moisture sensor if it has one, to avoid over-drying.
  • Clean the lint trap in the dryer before every load of laundry.
  • Dry only full loads of laundry, or reduce drying time for partial loads.
  • Combine loads made up of similar fabrics so items will all dry at the same rate.
  • In warmer seasons, run the dryer at night to keep the house cooler during the day.

If you’re in the market for a new washer, ENERGY STAR certified clothes washers use about 25% less energy and 33% less water than regular washers; you can save even more with an ENERGY STAR certified washer/dryer pair.

FYI: If every clothes washer purchased in the U.S. was ENERGY STAR certified, we could save more than $3.3 billion each year and prevent more than 19 billion pounds of annual greenhouse gas emissions, equal to the emissions from more than 1.8 million vehicles.
