Chill Out: Refrigerator EE Tips

Chill Out: Refrigerator EE Tips
Keep cool, conserve and save money!

As temperatures rise, you may be using your refrigerator and freezer more for cold drinks and cool treats. To reduce the amount of energy your refrigerator uses – and your utility bill – follow these tips:

  • Shut the door. Limit the amount of time the refrigerator door is open.
  • Set the proper temperature. Check the owner’s manual first, but most refrigerators operate best set at 35°F to 38°F. Set the freezer compartment between -5°F and 0°F.
  • Store only cool or room-temperature foods in the refrigerator. Let hot foods cool down before putting them in the refrigerator or freezer.
  • Pick the perfect spot for your refrigerator. If possible, position it away from another appliance that generates heat, like an oven or dishwasher, as well as any window that lets in direct sunlight.
  • Allow air to circulate behind the appliance. Leave at least a few inches between the wall and the refrigerator; if your refrigerator has condenser coils, be sure to keep them dust-free.
  • Inspect the door seals. If the rubber seals around the door are not airtight, replace them.
