Closet Cleanout that's Good for the Planet

Out with the old and in with new – clothing, that is. Many of us will be making room in our closets and dressers for new sweaters, pants, shirts, shoes and other new wardrobe winners. So what do you do with the stuff you no longer want or need? Consider the environment when making your decision.

Reusing, instead of throwing away old clothes, reduces the use of natural resources. Trashed clothing that ends up in landfills just creates more greenhouse gases, which negatively impact the planet. Fortunately, there are many choices when you want to put your old stuff to a good, new use.

Donate
There are numerous charitable organizations who distribute or sell donated items to people in need. Check out your local Goodwill or Salvation Army. Or hold a garage sale and donate the proceeds.

Swap
Hold a clothing swap with friends and family. Whether you meet up virtually via social media or in person (backyard party, anyone?), it’s a great way to refresh your wardrobe for free and spend time with the people in your life.

Resell
Make some money by selling your items on sites like Poshmark and eBay. Or bypass the selling route and still earn some cash by consigning clothing and accessories through thredUp or with bricks-and-mortar consignment stores in your area.

Repurpose
Reimagine, revise and update old clothes with the help of fashion hackers and helpers on YouTube, which offers a wide range of tutorials and DIY hacks to transform and reuse clothes.

Bonus tip: Denim collected through the Blue Jeans Go Green™ program is recycled into UltraTouch™ Denim Insulation. A portion of that insulation is distributed every year to help with building efforts in communities nationwide, such as those through Habitat for Humanity and similar organizations.
