Ocean City, NJ’s Varsity Inn has proudly served customers for more than 50 years, is two blocks from the beach and open year-round. Looking to reduce his energy bills while managing operating costs, owner-operator Keith Symonds recognized the Varsity Inn, housed in a building that was built in 1905, was ready for some upgrades. Keith participated in the South Jersey Gas Direct Install program, which makes upgrading to high-efficiency equipment easy and affordable for small to medium-sized businesses.
The Project
The upgrade project began with a free energy assessment of Keith’s building. Performed by an authorized program contractor, the expert assessment allowed the contractor to identify issues and recommend energy-saving measures to Keith.
After considering the assessment recommendations, energy savings projections and financial incentives, Keith decided to invest in high-efficiency lighting, heating and cooling units. The Direct Install program paid 70% of the project cost; Keith was able to finance the balance of the project cost at 0% interest, through the South Jersey Gas Smart Energy Partnerssm program (the South Jersey Gas Smart Energy Partners program is a portolio of energy and money saving energy efficiency programs exclusively for South Jersey Gas customers).
“The process was painless from start to finish’” says Keith. “The program contractor assists you every step of the way and explains the savings and benefits of your upgrades.”
The Savings
The energy-efficient upgrades enabled Keith to save more than $500 a month in energy costs and to significantly reduce his monthly energy usage. Replacing inefficient equipment with high-efficiency models is one of the most effective ways to reduce energy usage and lower monthly energy costs.
“The Direct Install program made it possible for me to invest in my business, lower energy costs and improve the comfort of my employees and customers,” says Keith. “Without the financial incentives, I would not have been able to afford the upgrades.”
The Program
Eligible equipment through the Direct Install program includes lighting, heating and cooling systems, refrigeration and more.
