SHARP II - Absecon Island Reliability Link

Project Purpose:

Following Superstorm Sandy,  South Jersey Gas Company has been in the process of upgrading and strengthening its natural gas system to increase reliability and resiliency. These upgrades will make the system less susceptible to damage from future major storm events. The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities authorized South Jersey Gas to develop an infrastructure upgrade program to meet this goal. This authorized program is called the “Storm Hardening and Reliability Program” or SHARP.

The “Absecon Island Reliability Link” is one of several barrier island storm hardening efforts associated with the SHARP program. The project provides an interconnecting link between two existing gas systems at the north and south ends of the island. This will allow for complete redundancy should damage or an outage occur on either system. This link will help ensure continued safe and reliable gas service to all our customers in Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate, Longport and Brigantine.

Construction Route:

The system upgrade will require temporary construction along the following roads:
  • North Albany Avenue - (from Filbert Avenue to Ventnor Avenue)
  • Atlantic Avenue - (from North Albany Avenue to Vermont Avenue)
Construction will occur in six (6) phases to limit the area of disturbance at any given time.
  • This website will be updated monthly to reflect the changes in phased work.
  • Please check back often to ensure you are up to date on where construction will be performed.

Delays and Detours

During each phase of construction, traffic flow in that area will be limited to a single lane in each direction. Please consider factoring additional time into your commute due to these temporary traffic patterns and potential delays. Please check this page regularly for updates on construction dates, areas of work and any planned detours.

Current Area of Construction

Construction areas identified by orange boxes on the project maps will have single lane traffic in each direction and no parking available for the length of the City block(s).
