South Jersey Gas a Founding Partner in EPA's Natural Gas STAR Methane Challenge Program

FOLSOM, NJ, June 10, 2016 – South Jersey Gas, a subsidiary of South Jersey Industries, Inc. (NYSE: SJI), recently joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Natural Gas STAR Methane Challenge Program as a Founding Partner. Forty-one oil and natural gas companies are voluntarily participating in the program, which is designed to provide a transparent platform for utilities, such as South Jersey Gas, to make, track, and communicate commitments to reduce methane emissions.

“South Jersey Gas is excited to join with industry peers to make ambitious and transparent commitments to reducing our methane emissions,” commented Jeffrey DuBois, president of South Jersey Gas. “We consistently focus on sustainability and the STAR Methane Challenge aligns with our commitment to help protect our region’s environment and natural resources.”

In participating, SJG will follow the Challenge’s Cast Iron and Unprotected Steel best management practice commitment. SJG will reduce emissions by replacing a significant portion of its aging bare steel and cast iron distribution mains and services over the next five years with modern medium density plastic mains and services.

“By continuing to upgrade our infrastructure, we are reducing emissions as well as maintaining the safety and reliability of our distribution system, providing a win-win for our customers,” added DuBois.
